Teams have their own culture and identity. When a team has a strong culture, it’s easy to describe to a stranger what behaviours are accepted or frowned upon, what the shared values are and how connected people feel to other team members and/or the team’s purpose.
Team culture and identity emerge as team members work together. In a virtual team, you might need to build your culture deliberately. If this is an area you need to improve, maybe this will help:
- TOOL: Use an online platform where you can share stories and information not directly related to your tasks.
- PROCESS: Regularly meet in real time (either on video or in person) to review how you’re working together, not just your project results.
- BEHAVIOUR: Pick two behaviours that you would like to see more of in your team and start role modelling.
